Major changes compared to the period 2004-2009 are:

  • The formation of a new political group, the European Conservatives and Reformists Group. This conservative, Eurosceptic group is headed by 26 MEPs from the UK's Conservative Party.
  • The Eurosceptic IND/DEM and UEN suffered heavy losses in the election. On their own they no longer had enough MEPs to form a separate group. MEPs from these parties formed Europe of Freedom and Democracy on 1 July 2009.
  • The centre-right European People's Party now formed its own parliamentary group, as the former members of the European Democrats left the group to join the ECR.
  • The parliamentary group of the centre-left Party of European Socialists renamed itself to Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats to allow non-socialist members of the Italian Democratic Party to sit in their group.

Famous quotes containing the words composition of, composition, european and/or parliament:

The proposed Constitution ... is, in strictness, neither a national nor a federal constitution; but a composition of both.
    James Madison (1751–1836)

If I don’t write to empty my mind, I go mad. As to that regular, uninterrupted love of writing ... I do not understand it. I feel it as a torture, which I must get rid of, but never as a pleasure. On the contrary, I think composition a great pain.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)

What is the first thing that savage tribes accept from Europeans nowadays? Brandy and Christianity, the European narcotics.—And what is it that most rapidly leads to their destruction?—The European narcotics.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

Undershaft: Alcohol is a very necessary article. It heals the sick—Barbara: It does nothing of the sort. Undershaft: Well, it assists the doctor: that is perhaps a less questionable way of putting it. It makes life bearable to millions of people who could not endure their existence if they were quite sober. It enables Parliament to do things at eleven at night that no sane person would do at eleven in the morning.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
