Platinum Hexafluoride - Synthesis

Synthesis

PtF6 was first prepared by reaction of fluorine with platinum metal. This route remains the method of choice.

Pt + 3 F2 → PtF6

PtF6 can also be prepared by disproportionation of PtF5. The required PtF5 can be obtained by fluorinating PtCl2:

2 PtCl2 + 5 F2 → 2 PtF5 + 2 Cl2
2 PtF5 → PtF6 + PtF4

Famous quotes containing the word synthesis:

The new shopping malls make possible the synthesis of all consumer activities, not least of which are shopping, flirting with objects, idle wandering, and all the permutations of these.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)

In order to begin an analysis, there must already be a synthesis present in the mind.
    Johan Huizinga (1872–1945)

The invention of photography provided a radically new picture-making process—a process based not on synthesis but on selection. The difference was a basic one. Paintings were made—constructed from a storehouse of traditional schemes and skills and attitudes—but photographs, as the man on the street put, were taken.
    Jean Szarkowski (b. 1925)
