Pitted Ware Culture - Graves

Graves

Its grave customs are not well known, but Västerbjers on the island of Gotland has produced a large number of grave fields, where the limestone has preserved the graves well. In these graves, archaeologists found skeletons laid on their backs with well-preserved tools in bone and horn. Numerous imported objects testify to good connections with the Scandinavian mainland, Denmark and Germany.

Famous quotes containing the word graves:

    After, when they disentwine
You from me and yours from mine,
    Neither can be certain who
Was that I whose mine was you.
To the act again they go
    More completely not to know.
    —Robert Graves (1895–1985)

    The guileless old scapegoat;
    For forty nights and days
    Followed in Jesus’ ways,
    Sure guard behind Him kept,
    Tears like a lover wept.
    —Robert Graves (1895–1985)

Blows the wind to-day, and the sun and the rain are flying,
Blows the wind on the moors to-day and now,
Where about the graves of the martyrs the whaups are crying,
    My heart remembers how!
    Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894)
