Pirates of Blood River

Pirates Of Blood River

The Pirates of Blood River is a 1962 British action film directed by John Gilling and starring Kerwin Mathews, Glenn Corbett, Christopher Lee and Oliver Reed.

While in a penal colony, Huguenot Jonathan Standish (Kerwin Mathews) is captured by pirates led by Capt. LaRoche (Christopher Lee) who force him to lead them back to his home village to retrieve a treasure supposedly hidden there.

This landlocked pirate movie features Michael Ripper, Andrew Keir, Oliver Reed, Peter Arne and Glenn Corbett. The female lead is Marla Landi. The pirates seem vaguely French because of a few of their names (LaRoche, Brocaire) but some are called Mack and Hench. The villagers appear to be a mix of Americans and Britons.

Oh, God! that bread should be so dear,
And flesh and blood so cheap!
    Thomas Hood (1799–1845)

We approached the Indian Island through the narrow strait called “Cook.” He said, “I ‘xpect we take in some water there, river so high,—never see it so high at this season. Very rough water there, but short; swamp steamboat once. Don’t paddle till I tell you, then you paddle right along.” It was a very short rapid. When we were in the midst of it he shouted “paddle,” and we shot through without taking in a drop.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
