Pioneer Homes

Pioneer Homes, in Syracuse, New York, was one of the earliest government public housing projects in the United States. Pioneer Homes was completed in 1941 and remains fully occupied even as another nearby public housing project was demolished. The project consists of 607 apartments, which include both row houses and 3-story walk-ups, all constructed of masonry with brick exteriors in an early modern style. It is bordered by East Adams Street, Renwick Avenue, Taylor Street, and South Townsend Street.

After a rash of drive-by shootings, the Syracuse Common Council voted in 2005 to gate off four out of five entrances to reduce traffic and crime.

Famous quotes containing the words pioneer and/or homes:

America is the civilization of people engaged in transforming themselves. In the past, the stars of the performance were the pioneer and the immigrant. Today, it is youth and the Black.
    Harold Rosenberg (1906–1978)

There is the rich quarter, with its houses of pink and white, and
    its crumbling, leafy terraces.
There is the poorer quarter, its homes a deep blue.
There is the market, where men are selling hats and swatting flies
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
