Pinxton - The Church

The Church

The church of St Helen dates originally from medieval times, possibly built on the site of a previous small castle. Much of it was rebuilt in 1790 reusing the original materials, and only the west tower and west end of the old church remains. By 1890, it was so dilapidated that most of the services were held in the mission room. However in the following century it was repaired and a new porch and north aisle were added in 1939.

Famous quotes containing the word church:

It is the custom of the Roman Church which I unworthily serve with the help of God, to tolerate some things, to turn a blind eye to some, following the spirit of discretion rather than the rigid letter of the law.
    Pope Gregory VII (c. 1020–1085)

The legacies that parents and church and teachers left to my generation of Black children were priceless but not material: a living faith reflected in daily service, the discipline of hard work and stick-to-itiveness, and a capacity to struggle in the face of adversity.
    Marian Wright Edelman (20th century)
