Pink Palace Museum and Planetarium - Pink Palace Mansion

Pink Palace Mansion

The headquarters for the Pink Palace Family of Museums is covered in pink Georgian marble, and was given to the city of Memphis in the late 1920s because of financial troubles of its owner, Clarence Saunders, the founder of Piggly Wiggly. Saunders built the Pink Palace mansion as his own residence in 1923, but lost the home because of financial reversals on Wall Street. The Pink Palace Mansion opened as the Memphis Museum of Natural History and Industrial Arts in March 1930. The original exhibits featured stuffed animals and birds, dolls, anthropological items from local wealthy collectors and items related to Memphis' history, such as Confederate military uniforms and memorabilia.

Famous quotes containing the words pink, palace and/or mansion:

Racism as a form of skin worship, and as a sickness and a pathological anxiety for America, is so great, until the poor whites—rather than fighting for jobs or education—fight to remain pink and fight to remain white. And therefore they cannot see an alliance with people that they feel to be inherently inferior.
    Jesse Jackson (b. 1941)

You weep, you weep for the sun an Image.
    ...
    the wind calls hideously,
    woe for the children’s fate,
    woe for a palace rent,
woe, woe for these who spent
    life-blood
    in hate.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

    Look,
I draw the sword myself; take it, and hit
The innocent mansion of my love, my heart.
Fear not, ‘tis empty of all things but grief.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
