Pink Mucket - Reason For Decline

Reason For Decline

At one time, the pink mucket was present in twenty-six rivers in the Midwest and eastern United States. The building of dams and reservoirs caused the flooding of the habitat, affecting both the mussel and the host fish. Deteriorating water quality and siltation also affects mussel populations. Other practices, such as dredging, gravel mining, removal of trees, and undergrowth along the stream bank, and non-point source pollution from agriculture and urban areas, have contributed to the decline in the pink mucket as well.

Famous quotes containing the words reason and/or decline:

The most spiritual human beings, assuming they are the most courageous, also experience the most painful tragedies by far: but for just this reason they honor life, because it pits its greatest opposition against them.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

Considered physiologically, everything ugly weakens and saddens man. It reminds him of decay, danger, impotence; it actually reduces his strength. The effect of ugliness can be measured with a dynamometer. Whenever anyone feels depressed, he senses the proximity of something “ugly.” His feeling of power, his will to power, his courage, his pride—they decline with ugliness, they rise with beauty.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
