Pinaleno Mountains - The Swift Trail

The Swift Trail

The Swift Trail (Arizona Route 366) is a modern highway making the PinaleƱos very accessible. The road is 36 miles (58 km) long with 23 paved miles plus 13 miles (21 km) of graded dirt. In the course of an afternoon you can experience climate zones you would see in a drive from Mexico to Canada. This switchbacking mountain road was named for T. T. Swift, the first supervisor of the Coronado National Forest. Initially just a trail, the route has been improved many times. Two notable eras of improvent came in the 1930s and the 1990s. The Arizona Department of Transportation celebrated the latest improvements on June 30, 1992.

Famous quotes containing the words swift and/or trail:

    He never courted men in station
    Nor persons had in admiration;
    Of no man’s greatness was afraid,
    Because he sought for no man’s aid.
    —Jonathan Swift (1667–1745)

    And Change with hurried hand has swept these scenes:
    The woods have fallen, across the meadow-lot
    The hunter’s trail and trap-path is forgot,
    And fire has drunk the swamps of evergreens;
    Yet for a moment let my fancy plant
    These autumn hills again: the wild dove’s haunt,
    The wild deer’s walk: in golden umbrage shut,
    Frederick Goddard Tuckerman (1821–1873)
