Pile Bridge - Duration of Pile Bridges

Duration of Pile Bridges

Perhaps one of the most well-known of the medieval pile bridges, and one that was probably similarly constructed as a pile bridge by the Romans, are the older versions of London Bridge. However even when the first version of the bridge as a stone structure, was commenced during the reign of Henry II in 1176, oak piles were used as part of the construction. Indeed some of those piles while driven in 1176 were still sturdy enough to be drawn in 1921, almost 750 years later.

Famous quotes containing the words duration of, duration, pile and/or bridges:

What matters it that man should have a little more knowledge of the universe? If he has it, he gets little higher. Is he not always infinitely removed from the end, and is not the duration of our life equally removed from eternity, even if it lasts ten years longer?
    Blaise Pascal (1623–1662)

This pond never breaks up so soon as the others in this neighborhood, on account both of its greater depth and its having no stream passing through it to melt or wear away the ice.... It indicates better than any water hereabouts the absolute progress of the season, being least affected by transient changes of temperature. A severe cold of a few days’ duration in March may very much retard the opening of the former ponds, while the temperature of Walden increases almost uninterruptedly.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

We have dreamt of every woman there is, and dreamt too of the miracle that would bring us the pleasure of being a woman, for women have all the qualities—courage, passion, the capacity to love, cunning—whereas all our imagination can do is naively pile up the illusion of courage.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)

When Death to either shall come—
I pray it be first to me.
    —Robert Bridges (1844–1930)
