Pier Luigi Bersani (born 29 September 1951) is an Italian politician and the current Secretary of the Democratic Party, the main center-left political party in Italy. He is the candidate of his party for prime minister to the 2013 Italian political election; he earned the candidacy by defeating the mayor of Florence Matteo Renzi in a primary election. He was Minister of Industry, Commerce and Craftmanship from 1996 to 1999, Minister of Transports from 1999 to 2001, and Minister of Economic Development from 2006 to 2008.
