Phuket King's Cup Regatta - The King's Cup Trophy

The King's Cup Trophy

The Phuket King's Cup Regatta trophy is special in many ways. Designed by architect and entrepreneur ML Tridhosyuth Devakul – known best for owning Mom Tri's Boathouse and Mom Tri's Villa Royale in Phuket, as well as Prem International School in Chiang Mai – the trophy was royally bestowed upon the regatta.

The Phuket King's Cup Regatta was founded in 1987 to honour His Majesty's 60th birthday. His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej is the ninth King of the Chakri Dynasty, a skilled sailor and boating enthusiast. Sailing and the number nine is a theme that runs throughout the trophy design.

There are nine beautiful sails coming out from the central silver column, which sit upon a base representing the sea. From its narrowest point, the silver base expands in width upwards towards the sails. There are in total nine bezels of growing width underneath the nine sails.

Atop the vertical column sits the symbol of His Majesty the King, known in Thai as Tra Sanyalak. The emblem features His Majesty's initials above which is the Thai symbol for the number nine, signifying the ninth King of the dynasty. And at the very top is the royal crown.

The silver trophy sits on a column of ash wood, adorned with the name of the regatta, the Phuket King's Cup Regatta.

The Royal Trophy was presented to founding regatta President Mr. Christopher J. King, also Commodore of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club at the time, in 1987 by M.L. Thawisan Ladawan, His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary.

Famous quotes containing the words king and/or cup:

    I’ll stake all my soul
    on that beauty,
    till God shall awake
    again in men’s hearts,
who have said he is dead
    our King and our Lover.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

I believe that water is the only drink for a wise man: wine is not so noble a liquor; and think of dashing the hopes of a morning with a cup of warm coffee, or of an evening with a dish of tea! Ah, how low I fall when I am tempted by them! Even music may be intoxicating. Such apparently slight causes destroyed Greece and Rome, and will destroy England and America.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
