He was married on July 21, 1942, at the Hidden Valley Ranch in Ventura County, California, to actress Joan Crawford. They were divorced in 1946. During this marriage Crawford adopted her first child, daughter, Christina. He later married a non-actor, Rosalind Lee; they remained married until his death.
