In August 2008, Tomson spoke to newspaper Sunday Sun about being targeted by an obsessive stalker who had been sending degrading letters and harassing the presenter at her home.
She and her partner Alan Lowery, a businessman, reside in Durham. She now splits her time between the latter and West London due to work commitments.
In January 2012, Tomson was part of a specialist team of meterologists who worked on the North East of England's first Weather rocket. The Rocket was to be launched from Sunderland and reach altitudes in excess of 100m to give advanced warning of rain.
