Industrial Relevance
The reverse reaction catalyzed by PAL has been used to convert trans-cinnamic acid to L-phenylalanine, which is a precursor of the sweetener aspartame. This process was developed by the Genex Corporation in the UK using yeast Rhodotorula cells.
