Government
The East Hampshire District Council offices are in Petersfield.
Petersfield is part of the parliamentary constituency of East Hampshire. Its Member of Parliament (MP) is Damian Hinds, a member of the Conservative Party. He took over from Michael Mates who stood down at the 2010 general election.
Before the creation of the East Hampshire constituency in 1983, the town had been represented through the Petersfield constituency.
The County Councillors are John West (Petersfield Butser Division) and Vaughan Clark (Petersfield Hangers Division), since May 2009. The next county elections are in May 2013.
EHDC has supported the formation of the South Downs National Park, which includes Petersfield.

Famous quotes containing the word government:
“The government of the world I live in was not framed, like that of Britain, in after-dinner conversations over the wine.”
—Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
“We talk about a representative government; but what a monster of a government is that where the noblest faculties of the mind, and the whole heart, are not represented! A semihuman tiger or ox, stalking over the earth, with its heart taken out and the top of its brain shot away. Heroes have fought well on their stumps when their legs were shot off, but I never heard of any good done by such a government as that.”
—Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
