Personal Life.
Peter is one of twins. His twin brother John, an architect and designer, died at the age of 39. His brother David, a science and technology historian and commentator, other twin brothers Christopher and Roger, and sister Jennifer complete his immediate family.
In 1963 he married Katharine Chapman Lawder, who he met when studying at Cornell. They divorced three years later. In 1969 he met and married Heather Renee Shain in Cambridge Massachusetts. He has two daughters, a step-daughter from Heather’s first marriage, Sonya (b 1963), and Hannah (b 1971). Heather Shain Ellyard is a respected visual artist, whose paintings hang in many major collections including the Australian National Gallery. They separated in 1997. Peter has one grandson Tobias (b 2009).
