Future Directions
PURLz 2.0, currently Beta testing, makes major changes to the PURL concept and implementation. Most notably in terms of implementation, the software runs on a Semantic Web framework with information stored in an RDF database. The implementation team intends for the software to provide all the functions of a Web server, excluding the serving of content. Active PURLs, which act similar to a stored procedure in relational databases, are being experimented with to allow a PURL server to actively participate in the creation of metadata describing a Web resource.
