Attacks Against People
The breed has acquired negative publicity after being linked to three fatalities: In 2001, 33-year-old Diane Whipple of San Francisco, California, USA was killed by two dogs identified as Presa Canario/Mastiff-crosses and owned by Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel. Knoller and Noel had acquired the dogs from a client who had trained them for fighting.
In 2006, Shawna Willey, a 30-year-old Florida woman, was killed by her own dog, a Presa Canario.
In August 2012, Rebecca Carey of Decatur, Georgia, USA was killed by dog(s) that she was caring for in her home. Two were pit bulls, one a boxer mix, and two Presas. Authorities say it is unclear which dog(s) killed her.
Importation and sale of the breed is prohibited in Australia and New Zealand.

Famous quotes containing the words attacks and/or people:
“Literature is a defense against the attacks of life. It says to life: You cant deceive me. I know your habits, foresee and enjoy watching all your reactions, and steal your secret by involving you in cunning obstructions that halt your normal flow.”
—Cesare Pavese (19081950)
“To associate with other like-minded people in small, purposeful groups is for the great majority of men and women a source of profound psychological satisfaction. Exclusiveness will add to the pleasure of being several, but at one; and secrecy will intensify it almost to ecstasy.”
—Aldous Huxley (18941963)
