In 2005 the US think-tank the Council on Foreign Relations believed that the MEK had 10,000 members, one-third to one-half of whom were fighters. The think-tank claims that MEK membership dwindled and that the organization had little success attracting new recruits. According to a 2003 article by the New York Times, the MEK was composed of 5,000 fighters based in Iraq, many of them female.
