The Penn Central Transportation Company, commonly abbreviated to Penn Central, was an American railroad company headquartered in Philadelphia that operated from 1968 until 1976. It was created by the merger on February 1, 1968, of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and the New York Central Railroad (NYC). The New Haven Railroad (NH) was added to the merger at the insistence of the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) on January 1, 1969.
The railroad operated 20,083 miles of road and 40,985 miles of track at the end of 1970, not including P&LE and PRSL; it reported 83,955 million ton-miles of revenue freight and 3,158 million passenger miles.
