Around 1590, it was the seat of a Vogul chief called Ablegirim or Abdul Kerim. He was defeated by the Russians in 1592-1594 in order to pacify one of the routes into Siberia. He and his family was taken to Moscow as hostages. Pelym was built in 1592 on the site of his former residence. Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of every country begins in the heart of a man or a woman.
    Willa Cather (1876–1947)

It is the true office of history to represent the events themselves, together with the counsels, and to leave the observations and conclusions thereupon to the liberty and faculty of every man’s judgement.
    Francis Bacon (1561–1626)

When the landscape buckles and jerks around, when a dust column of debris rises from the collapse of a block of buildings on bodies that could have been your own, when the staves of history fall awry and the barrel of time bursts apart, some turn to prayer, some to poetry: words in the memory, a stained book carried close to the body, the notebook scribbled by hand—a center of gravity.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
