A New Calendar in The Province of Asia

Sometime around 9BCE, the provincial council of the province of Asia decided that it needed to try to find a unique way to honour Augustus. As such, it decreed a competition to find such an honour with the winner to receive a crown from the province. It was Paullus himself, while proconsul of Asia, who came up with the winning proposal, specifically a new calendar for the province of Asia, wherein the new year would start on September 23, Augustus' birthday.

Famous quotes containing the words calendar, province and/or asia:

To divide one’s life by years is of course to tumble into a trap set by our own arithmetic. The calendar consents to carry on its dull wall-existence by the arbitrary timetables we have drawn up in consultation with those permanent commuters, Earth and Sun. But we, unlike trees, need grow no annual rings.
    Clifton Fadiman (b. 1904)

It is the province of knowledge to speak, and it is the privilege of wisdom to listen.
    Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809–1894)

So-called Western Civilization, as practised in half of Europe, some of Asia and a few parts of North America, is better than anything else available. Western civilization not only provides a bit of life, a pinch of liberty and the occasional pursuance of happiness, it’s also the only thing that’s ever tried to. Our civilization is the first in history to show even the slightest concern for average, undistinguished, none-too-commendable people like us.
