Patrick Joseph Hayes - Priesthood

Priesthood

Hayes was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Michael Corrigan on September 8, 1892. He then furthered his studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., earning a Licentiate of Sacred Theology in 1894.

Upon his return to New York, Hayes became an assistant pastor at St. Gabriel's Church on the Lower East Side, where he served under its pastor, John Murphy Farley (whom he would later succeed as Archbishop of New York). Hayes, following Farley's elevation to the episcopacy, served as his private secretary from 1895 to 1903, whence he became chancellor of the Archdiocese and president of the Cathedral College. He was raised to the rank of Domestic Prelate of His Holiness on October 15, 1907.

Famous quotes containing the word priesthood:

The priesthood in many ways is the ultimate closet in Western civilization, where gay people particularly have hidden for the past two thousand years.
    Bishop John Spong (b. 1931)

The priesthood is a marriage. People often start by falling in love, and they go on for years without realizing that that love must change into some other love which is so unlike it that it can hardly be recognised as love at all.
    Iris Murdoch (b. 1919)
