A paternal bond refers to the relationship between a father and his child. In the U.S., legal paternity is presumed for the husband of the mother unless a separate action is taken; an unmarried man may establish paternity by signing a voluntary recognition of paternity or by taking court action. Paternity may also be established between a man and a younger person, commonly in adoption, without the two being biologically related.

Famous quotes containing the words paternal and/or bond:
“My paternal grandmother would not light a fire on the Sabbath and piled all Sundays washing-up in a bucket, to be dealt with on Monday morning, because the Sabbath was a day of resta practice that made my paternal grandfather, the village atheist, as mad as fire. Nevertheless, he willed five quid to the minister, just to be on the safe side.”
—Angela Carter (19401992)
“Every doctor will allow a colleague to decimate a whole countryside sooner than violate the bond of professional etiquet by giving him away.”
—George Bernard Shaw (18561950)
