Attributing Statement To Barry W. Lynn

On the November 5, 2005 airing of The 700 Club, Robertson claimed that Reverend Barry W. Lynn, director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said that ""if a church is burning down, the local community could not send the fire engine to put the fire out because that would violate, quote, separation of church and state." Rev. Lynn responded, denying the allegation and saying "I've seen take pot shots at me with information I have repeatedly told them is not true. Robertson, for example, continues to tell national television audiences that I believe that a public fire department can't go to a burning church without violating the separation of church and state. He apparently uses this "anecdote" to demonstrate my radical, wacky beliefs. Trouble is (for him), I never said it and don't believe it." Robertson also drew criticism from Focus on the Family for the statement in their magazine, Citizen, saying that "One Christian conservative leader has mistakenly suggested that Lynn would say a burning church shouldn't be able to call the fire department lest it violate the bounds of church-state separation."

Famous quotes containing the words attributing, statement, barry and/or lynn:

One will seldom go wrong in attributing extreme actions to vanity, moderate ones to habit, and petty ones to fear.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

No statement about God is simply, literally true. God is far more than can be measured, described, defined in ordinary language, or pinned down to any particular happening.
    David Jenkins (b. 1925)

But whether on the scaffold high,
    Or in the battle’s van,
The fittest place where man can die
Is where he dies for man.
    —Michael J. Barry (1817–1889)

In the quilts I had found good objects—hospitable, warm, with soft edges yet resistant, with boundaries yet suggesting a continuous safe expanse, a field that could be bundled, a bundle that could be unfurled, portable equipment, light, washable, long-lasting, colorful, versatile, functional and ornamental, private and universal, mine and thine.
Radka Donnell-Vogt, U.S. quiltmaker. As quoted in Lives and Works, by Lynn F. Miller and Sally S. Swenson (1981)
