Paramount Theatre (New York City)

The Paramount Theatre was a noted 3,664 seat movie palace located at 43rd Street and Broadway in the Times Square district of New York City. Opened in 1926, it was premiere showcase and New York headquarters to Paramount Pictures. Adolph Zukor, founder of Paramount Famous Players Film Company, maintained an office in the building until his death in 1976. Paramount Theatre eventually became a popular live performance venue. The theater was closed in 1964 and its space converted to office and retail use. The tower which housed it, known as the Paramount Building located at 1501 Broadway, is in commercial use as an office building and is still home to Paramount Pictures offices, and remains a Times Square landmark.

Following the closing of the Times Square Paramount Theatre, two other theaters in Manhattan have had the same name: The Paramount Theatre at Madison Square Garden and a movie theater in Columbus Circle, now demolished.

Famous quotes containing the words paramount, theatre and/or york:

There are many faculties in man, each of which takes its turn of activity, and that faculty which is paramount in any period and exerts itself through the strongest nation, determines the civility of that age: and each age thinks its own the perfection of reason.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

As in a theatre the eyes of men,
After a well-graced actor leaves the stage,
Are idly bent on him that enters next,
Thinking his prattle to be tedious,
Even so, or with much more contempt, men’s eyes
    Did scowl on gentle Richard.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

It is with unfathomable love, pure joy and no regret that we leave this world. Men, do not cry for our fate, but cry for your own.
