Pantex Plant - Labor Troubles

Labor Troubles

Labor troubles arose in 2007 following the implementation of stricter physical and combat performance requirements for armed nuclear security personnel following the September 11th attacks. The worker's union for the Pantex guards protested that the new standards—including requiring all guards to wear bulletproof vests and carry rifles during their 12-hour guard shift—were unfairly strenuous to middle-aged personnel nearing retirement. Pantex guards make an average of $72,000/year with 800+ hours of overtime.

500 guards walked off the site and went on strike just after midnight on April 20, 2007 and were replaced with a temporary guard force. After 45 days of intense negotiations, a new 5 year contract was agreed upon between the Pantex Guards Union and BWXT.

Famous quotes containing the words labor and/or troubles:

When the precepts and example of Jesus Christ fully interpermeate society, to labor with the hands will be regarded not only as a duty but a privilege.
    Catherine E. Beecher (1800–1878)

It is quite a common and vulgar thing among humans to understand, foresee, know and predict the troubles of others. But oh what a rare thing it is to predict, know, foresee and understand one’s own troubles.
    François Rabelais (1494–1553)
