Palmers Cross - History

History

On the UK Directorate of Overseas Surveys 1:50,000 map of 1973, two small, neighbouring communities are shown in this vicinity, both centred on minor road junctions:

  1. a village called The Cross with a school and postal agency
  2. a hamlet called Palmers

It seems that in the years since they have grown and merged, their names being combined in the process. From satellite imagery the area is now clearly a contiguous suburb of May Pen.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Boys forget what their country means by just reading “the land of the free” in history books. Then they get to be men, they forget even more. Liberty’s too precious a thing to be buried in books.
    Sidney Buchman (1902–1975)

The greatest horrors in the history of mankind are not due to the ambition of the Napoleons or the vengeance of the Agamemnons, but to the doctrinaire philosophers. The theories of the sentimentalist Rousseau inspired the integrity of the passionless Robespierre. The cold-blooded calculations of Karl Marx led to the judicial and business-like operations of the Cheka.
    Aleister Crowley (1875–1947)

Racism is an ism to which everyone in the world today is exposed; for or against, we must take sides. And the history of the future will differ according to the decision which we make.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)
