Famous quotes containing the word standing:

    Better to be despised and have a servant, than to be self-important and lack food.
    Bible: Hebrew, Proverbs 12:9.

    RSV translation reads, “Better is a man of humble standing who works for himself than one who plays the great man but lacks bread.”

    Mars and Venus are at it again. This time, Hephaestus is standing by with a private detective, a photographer, and a lawyer.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

    We all have known
    Good critics, who have stamped out poet’s hopes;
    Good statesmen, who pulled ruin on the state;
    Good patriots, who, for a theory, risked a cause;
    Good kings, who disembowelled for a tax;
    Good Popes, who brought all good to jeopardy;
    Good Christians, who sat still in easy-chairs;
    And damned the general world for standing up.—
    Now, may the good God pardon all good men!
    Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861)
