Owen Valley Community High School

Owen Valley Community High School (OVHS) is a high school located in Spencer, Indiana with 1200 students and more than 80 faculty members. Built in 1971, OVHS is the result of a consolidation of several smaller schools located within Owen County, Indiana. Owen Valley's mascot is the Patriot, and the school's colors are red, white and blue. The school's newspaper is the Watchdog Weekly, and the yearbook is the Triad, meaning the three schools that were merged to make Owen Valley High School – Patricksburg High School, Spencer High School, and Gosport High School. Those former high schools are now elementary schools.

In fall of 2003 ground was broken on the renovation and additions that have since been made to the OVHS. The class of 2003 was the last to graduate from the original 1971 building. The gift from the senior class in 2003 was a cornerstone made of limestone from the Bybee Bros. Stone Quarry in Elletsville, Indiana for the new addition and can be viewed from the front of the building. The Cornerstone was written by graduating Class Secretary Thomas Barnett. It reads as follow "Dedicated to honor those who educate future generations."

In 2002 OVHS was awarded the name of "A New American High School" by the United States Department of Education.

Famous quotes containing the words high school, owen, valley, community, high and/or school:

Someday soon, we hope that all middle and high school will have required courses in child rearing for girls and boys to help prepare them for one of the most important and rewarding tasks of their adulthood: being a parent. Most of us become parents in our lifetime and it is not acceptable for young people to be steeped in ignorance or questionable folklore when they begin their critical journey as mothers and fathers.
    James P. Comer (20th century)

Pale flakes with fingering stealth come feeling for our faces—
We cringe in holes, back on forgotten dreams, and stare, snow-dazed,
    Deep into grassier ditches.
    —Wilfred Owen (1893–1918)

The wide wonder of Broadway is disconsolate in the daytime; but gaudily glorious at night, with a milling crowd filling sidewalk and roadway, silent, going up, going down, between upstanding banks of brilliant lights, each building braided and embossed with glowing, many-coloured bulbs of man-rayed luminance. A glowing valley of the shadow of life. The strolling crowd went slowly by through the kinematically divine thoroughfare of New York.
    Sean O’Casey (1884–1964)

when Mrs Kindhead comes to collect for the Community Chest
grab her and tell her There are unfavorable omens in the sky!
And when the mayor comes to get my vote tell him
When are you going to stop people killing whales!
    Gregory Corso (b. 1930)

What is most striking in the Maine wilderness is the continuousness of the forest, with fewer open intervals or glades than you had imagined. Except the few burnt lands, the narrow intervals on the rivers, the bare tops of the high mountains, and the lakes and streams, the forest is uninterrupted.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The school system, custodian of print culture, has no place for the rugged individual. It is, indeed, the homogenizing hopper into which we toss our integral tots for processing.
    Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980)
