Orpheus Centre

The Orpheus Centre is an inclusive performing arts centre founded in 1998 by British entertainer and musician Richard Stilgoe in his former family home in Godstone, Surrey, in the United Kingdom.

Previously, it offered residential care to the young disabled adults who studied performance and life skills and performed there, but in 2011 converted to supported housing wherein students are encouraged and enabled to live independently. It hosts over 40 disabled young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 each year.

Famous quotes containing the words orpheus and/or centre:

    Or bid the soul of Orpheus sing
    Such notes as, warbled to the string,
    Drew iron tears down Pluto’s cheek,
    And made Hell grant what love did seek;
    John Milton (1608–1674)

    Freedom to think our own thoughts, freedom to utter them, freedom to live out the promptings of our inner life ultimated in this convention, was termed a monstrosity of the 19th century. What was it?—the legitimate out-birth of the eternal law of progress. This reformation underlies every other; it is the only healthful centre around which hope of humanity can revolve.
    Harriot K. Hunt (1805–1875)
