Oregon State Beavers Wrestling

The Oregon State Beavers wrestling program was established in 1909, competing in collegiate wrestling across 93 seasons since then. Traditionally a national powerhouse, the Beavers won the Amateur Athletic Union national championship in 1926 (Oregon State's first national championship in any sport) and have won their conference championship 48 times. The team has produced 87 All-Americans, 12 individual national champions, and is associated with five National Wrestling Hall of Fame members. The team has finished a season ranked in the NCAA top 25 on 40 occasions, including finishing 19 seasons in the top 10 and two seasons as national runner-ups. The team's all-time dual meet record is 971-315-28 as of the end of the 2011-12 season which ranks them 3rd all-time for dual meet victories.

Jim Zalesky (Iowa, '84) is the head coach. In his seven years at Oregon State, he has coached six All-Americans, won three Pac-12 Championships, and compiled a 78-31-2 record while coaching the team to two top 25 finishes including one top 10 finish. He is assisted by Troy Steiner (Iowa, '93), Kevin Roberts (Oregon, '96), and Travis Pascoe (Nebraska, '05).

Famous quotes containing the words oregon, state, beavers and/or wrestling:

The Oregon [matter] and the annexation of Texas are now all- important to the security and future peace and prosperity of our union, and I hope there are a sufficient number of pure American democrats to carry into effect the annexation of Texas and [extension of] our laws over Oregon. No temporizing policy or all is lost.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)

President Lowell of Harvard appealed to students ‘to prepare themselves for such services as the Governor may call upon them to render.’ Dean Greenough organized an ‘emergency committee,’ and Coach Fisher was reported by the press as having declared, ‘To hell with football if men are needed.’
—For the State of Massachusetts, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

One has but to observe a community of beavers at work in a stream to understand the loss in his sagacity, balance, co-operation, competence, and purpose which Man has suffered since he rose up on his hind legs.... He began to chatter and he developed Reason, Thought, and Imagination, qualities which would get the smartest group of rabbits or orioles in the world into inextricable trouble overnight.
    James Thurber (1894–1961)

There are people who think that wrestling is an ignoble sport. Wrestling is not sport, it is a spectacle, and it is no more ignoble to attend a wrestled performance of suffering than a performance of the sorrows of Arnolphe or Andromaque.
    Roland Barthes (1915–1980)
