The Orange Twin Conservation Community (OTCC) is a limited liability company (LLC) formed to create a pedestrian-based eco-village and preserve open space on more than 150 acres (0.61 km2) of land located five miles (8 km) north of downtown Athens, Georgia. The eco-village is still in the planning and development stage (plans).
OTCC was founded in the late 1990s by Laura Carter along with two friends, Laura Glenn and Barbara Denvir. Together they developed the initial concept of a village-style community in the Athens area. They also scouted and eventually found a large tract of undeveloped land with two perennial streams and much wooded acreage suitable for the community. In 2000 seven more interested persons joined the group to form the LLC for the purpose of purchasing the land and developing the community. OTCC membership currently consists of more than 20 shareholders who reside in Athens and elsewhere. OrangeTwin.com hosts OTCC's website and provides an online store where members can sell merchandise.
In addition to their planning and development activities, OTCC has undertaken numerous projects on its land, both functional and aesthetic. In one of the largest of these projects, a group of OTCC members rescued a condemned house from an in-town neighborhood and moved it to the community's land where the house has since been remodeled and restored (photos). Members and volunteers have also laid out extensive walking trails, repaired an old girl scout pavilion, planted a vineyard, and established pastureland, a vegetable garden and chicken house. OTCC occasionally stages concerts and other events on its land as well. To date, the concerts have featured bands such as Elf Power, The Olivia Tremor Control, and Bonnie Prince Billy as well as Nana Grizol and Defiance, Ohio.
Famous quotes containing the words orange, twin, conservation and/or community:
“He hangs in shades the orange bright,
Like golden lamps in a green night,
And does in the pomegranates close
Jewels more rich than Ormus shows;
He makes the figs our mouths to meet,
And throws the melons at our feet;
But apples plants of such a price
No tree could ever bear them twice.”
—Andrew Marvell (16211678)
“We live under continual threat of two equally fearful, but seemingly opposed, destinies: unremitting banality and inconceivable terror. It is fantasy, served out in large rations by the popular arts, which allows most people to cope with these twin specters.”
—Susan Sontag (b. 1933)
“The putting into force of laws which shall secure the conservation of our resources, as far as they may be within the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, including the more important work of saving and restoring our forests and the great improvement of waterways, are all proper government functions which must involve large expenditure if properly performed.”
—William Howard Taft (18571930)
“The most perfect political community must be amongst those who are in the middle rank, and those states are best instituted wherein these are a larger and more respectable part, if possible, than both the other; or, if that cannot be, at least than either of them separate, so that being thrown into the balance it may prevent either scale from preponderating.”
—Aristotle (384322 B.C.)
