Opium Addiction Within Afghan Society
Afghanistan has seen a high rate of opium addiction among refugees returning from Iran and Pakistan. Afghan filmmaker Jawed Taiman in his film Addicted in Afghanistan attributes this to the presence of U.S. troops, claiming that opium addiction was significantly lower under Communist and Taliban rule. However, there appears to be no credible link between U.S. presence and "Afghan" use of opium.

Famous quotes containing the words opium, addiction and/or society:
“What opium is instilled into all disaster? It shows formidable as we approach it, but there is at last no rough rasping friction, but the most slippery sliding surfaces. We fall soft on a thought.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“All sin tends to be addictive, and the terminal point of addiction is what is called damnation.”
—W.H. (Wystan Hugh)
“It used to be said that, socially speaking, Philadelphia asked who a person is, New York how much is he worth, and Boston what does he know. Nationally it has now become generally recognized that Boston Society has long cared even more than Philadelphia about the first point and has refined the asking of who a person is to the point of demanding to know who he was. Philadelphia asks about a mans parents; Boston wants to know about his grandparents.”
—Cleveland Amory (b. 1917)
