The Oosterweelconnection is a long running proposed construction project intended to complete the Antwerp Ring Road. Beheersmaatschappij Antwerpen Mobiel (Holding Company Antwerp Mobility - BAM), a Flemish Government controlled body has, since 2001, proposed to connect the Expressweg (E34) near Blokkersdijk via a toll tunnel (the Oosterweeltunnel) underneath the Scheldt, leading to a double deck bridge over the Straatsburgdok (Lange Wapperbrug) and connecting with the R1 Antwerp Ring Road at Merksem. However, this proposal has not received final approvals despite lengthy development work and various alternative solutions have been proposed since the financial crisis period of 2008-9 made BAM's public private partnership financing solution unfeasible.
