Online Community Manager - Professional Roles

Professional Roles

In the fall of 2007, Jeremiah Owyang (was Sr Analyst at Forrester Research: Social Computing) independently gathered job descriptions. His research resulted in his publishing The Four Tenets of the Community Manager.

This is an emerging and fast growing profession, especially given the growth of branded online communities, online research communities, corporate blogs and other social media marketing and research activities.

In 2008, Jeremiah Owyang began maintaining a list of online community managers employed by large corporations (a Fortune 5000 company or over 1,000 employees). This list is certainly not exhaustive and does not include the many community managers at smaller organizations, but it does indicate the prevalence of the position in mid 2008.

Famous quotes containing the words professional and/or roles:

Never be intimidated when you deal with men. Curse, don’t cry.
Anonymous, U.S. professional woman. As quoted in Aspirations and Mentoring in an Academic Environment, ch. 4, by Mary Niles Maack and Joanne Passet (1994)

A concern with parenting...must direct attention beyond behavior. This is because parenting is not simply a set of behaviors, but participation in an interpersonal, diffuse, affective relationship. Parenting is an eminently psychological role in a way that many other roles and activities are not.
    Nancy Chodorow (20th century)
