A. ^ : The Second Division was renamed to the First Division following the advent of the FA Premier League. The Third Division was also renamed to Second Division.
B. ^ : The League Cup was founded in the 1960–61 season.
C. ^ : Figures include goals include all competitions. Goals in bold show new club record.
D. ^ : Oldham Athletic left the Lancashire Combination after gaining acceptance into the Football League.
E. ^ : The 1939–40 season was abandoned in early September and all results annulled, after only three matches had been played.
