Old Warden Castle

Old Warden Castle, also known as Quince Hill, is located in the village of Old Warden, in the county of Bedfordshire, England.

It was a motte-and-bailey castle, built in timber.

Roman and Celtic remains have also been located at the site.

Today, only earthworks remain. These are known locally as Quints or Quince Hill. In 1995 the motte and the adjacent ringwork were classified as a Scheduled Monument.

Famous quotes containing the words warden and/or castle:

This was a great point gained; the archdeacon would certainly not come to morning service at Westminster Abbey, even though he were in London; and here the warden could rest quietly, and, when the time came, duly say his prayers.
    Anthony Trollope (1815–1882)

If, in looking at the lives of princes, courtiers, men of rank and fashion, we must perforce depict them as idle, profligate, and criminal, we must make allowances for the rich men’s failings, and recollect that we, too, were very likely indolent and voluptuous, had we no motive for work, a mortal’s natural taste for pleasure, and the daily temptation of a large income. What could a great peer, with a great castle and park, and a great fortune, do but be splendid and idle?
    William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863)
