2011 Convention
"According to The Oklahoma Democratic Party which held their State Convention on May 14, 2011 to address multiple issues and to seek resolutions. The purpose of the meeting was to elect a Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer of the Oklahoma Democratic Party for a two year term office. The committee also elected four State Affirmative Action Committee members to consider proposed amendments to the Oklahoma Democratic Party Constitution, Bylaws; and to consider resolutions.".
The Oklahoma Democratic Party decided to hire an executive director over a decade ago to oversee the party headquarters and business which was paid by the Oklahoma State Democratic Party. However, the Democrats have come to the realization that it has not ever been used in the manner it was intended for. They believe that it is time to divide the positions of the executive director and the state party chair by paying the state Democratic Party chair a fair salary to match the duties and responsibilities of that position. The Party Chair's job is to raise money for the Party. Therefore it will be the Chair's duty to raise enough money for his or her own salary as well as of the Executive Director.
The second issue they discussed was their belief that the Electoral College should no longer be used in Presidential Elections. The Oklahoma Democratic Party will be supporting President Obama for his re-election bid realizing there is no "perfect" president. When it comes to healthcare they support continued funding to public health programs such as Medicaid and Medicare, as well as their state programs. They support government funded embryonic stem cell research. The party also supports the legalization of medical marijuana. They believe public education should be properly funded that will lead the nation. They oppose vouches that would divert tax dollars to private institutions.
Finally, the Oklahoma Democratic Party supports teacher's rights to unionize. When it comes to business and labor they support protecting homeowners from unfair foreclosures. They would support the elimination of predatory lending practices and setting limitations on credit card interest rates. The Democratic Party would support eliminating states sales tax on food. The Party would like to increase taxes on the wealthiest citizens of Oklahoma. They would like to reform the justice system because the incarceration rates are too high especially for females. The Party supports the second amendment rights of Oklahomans but also endorses responsible gun laws. The Oklahoma Democratic Party supports continued investments in green energies.
