Oil of amber is a transparent, yellow oil, procured from succinic acid (spirit of amber) by increasing the heating temperature. It was produced by repeated distillation. It is very fluid and penetrative and was once used as an antihysteric and emmenagogue.
Famous quotes containing the words oil and/or amber:
“His education lay like a film of white oil on the black lake of his barbarian consciousness. For this reason, the things he said were hardly interesting at all. Only what he was.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“Swimmer of noonday, lean for the perfect dive
To the dead Mothers face, whose subtile down
You had not seen take amber light alive.”
—Allen Tate (18991979)
