Ohio Democratic Party - Areas of Strength

Areas of Strength

Democratic strength lies mainly in the northeastern part of the state, the traditional pro-union, Democratic bastion, dominated by manufacturing and the cities of Cleveland, Toledo, Youngstown, Akron, Lorain, and Canton. Democrats are in the majority in the urban areas of Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati but those majorities are often offset by conservative strength in the surrounding suburbs. The impoverished Appalachian region of Ohio is traditionally Democratic and sometimes swings for the Democrats. Electoral strength is reflected in the mayoral offices of Ohio's major cities (which formed the heart of the Ohio delegation to the 2004 Democratic National Convention).

Famous quotes containing the words areas of, areas and/or strength:

    The ambiguous, gray areas of authority and responsibility between parents and teachers exacerbate the distrust between them. The distrust is further complicated by the fact that it is rarely articulated, but usually remains smoldering and silent.
    Sara Lawrence Lightfoot (20th century)

    The planet on which we live is poorly organized, many areas are overpopulated, others are reserved for a few, technology’s potential is only in part realized, and most people are starving.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)

    If thought is life
    And strength & breath,
    And the want
    Of thought is death;

    Then am I
    A happy fly,
    If I live,
    Or if I die.
    William Blake (1757–1827)
