History
Odernheim first appears in the historical record around AD 976. Thus, the village can rightly claim to be over 1,000 years old.
Most notably, Odernheim is home to the medieval monastery of Disibodenberg. The site is named after St. Disibod, who resided there in the 7th century. From 1106 to 1147, Disibodenberg was home to the famous nun Hildegard von Bingen. It was at Disibodenberg that Hildegard composed her most famous theological work, Scivias, or "Know the Ways of the Lord." Hildegard left Disibodenberg in 1147 to establish two convents in the vicinity of Bingen on the Rhine.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“And now this is the way in which the history of your former life has reached my ears! As he said this he held out in his hand the fatal letter.”
—Anthony Trollope (18151882)
“A poets object is not to tell what actually happened but what could or would happen either probably or inevitably.... For this reason poetry is something more scientific and serious than history, because poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.”
—Aristotle (384323 B.C.)
“All things are moral. That soul, which within us is a sentiment, outside of us is a law. We feel its inspiration; out there in history we can see its fatal strength.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
