Famous quotes containing the words oak, hill, high and/or school:

I could lecture on dry oak leaves; I could, but who would hear me? If I were to try it on any large audience, I fear it would be no gain to them, and a positive loss to me. I should have behaved rudely toward my rustling friends.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

What was dancing to you then?
We went from the high gate away
To a black hill the other side of men
    Where one wild stag stared
    At the going day.
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

To me this world is all one continued vision of fancy or imagination, and I feel flattered when I am told so. What is it sets Homer, Virgil and Milton in so high a rank of art? Why is Bible more entertaining and instructive than any other book? Is it not because they are addressed to the imagination, which is spiritual sensation, and but mediately to the understanding or reason?
    William Blake (1757–1827)

A monarch, when good, is entitled to the consideration which we accord to a pirate who keeps Sunday School between crimes; when bad, he is entitled to none at all.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
