NZR EC Class - Withdrawal

Withdrawal

In 1970, the EC class was reaching the end of its economic working life. Due to the locomotive changeover for such a short section being costly, and with drainage work going on in the vicinity of the Woolston sub-station, it was decided to reduce the losses made on this section and at the same time make it easier for the drainage work to proceed by withdrawing the electric locomotives. Diesel locomotives would be able to handle all trains through the tunnel.

All six locomotives were written off in September 1970, with the last in service being EC 9, which hauled the last electric train over this line on Friday 18 September. Five of the locomotives were then scrapped while one was put aside for the Ferrymead-based Tramway Historical Society.

Famous quotes containing the word withdrawal:

A bizarre sensation pervades a relationship of pretense. No truth seems true. A simple morning’s greeting and response appear loaded with innuendo and fraught with implications.... Each nicety becomes more sterile and each withdrawal more permanent.
    Maya Angelou (b. 1928)

A separation situation is different for adults than it is for children. When we were very young children, a physical separation was interpreted as a violation of our inalienable rights....As we grew older, the withdrawal of love, whether that meant being misunderstood, mislabeled or slighted, became the separation situation we responded to.
    Roger Gould (20th century)
