Belief System
The Nyakyusa stood naked before evil. Notions of reward and punishment in an after-life were lacking. Religion was this-worldly and concerned with fertility and prosperity. Only the coming of Christianity did the fear of burning in hell appear with rewards and punishments reserved for an after-life.

Famous quotes containing the words belief and/or system:
“If ever the search for a tranquil belief should end,
The future might stop emerging out of the past,
Out of what is full of us; yet the search
And the future emerging out of us seem to be one.”
—Wallace Stevens (18791955)
“My advice to people today is as follows: If you take the game of life seriously, if you take your nervous system seriously, if you take your sense organs seriously, if you take the energy process seriously, you must turn on, tune in, and drop out.”
—Timothy Leary (b. 1920)
