Nuclear Reaction - Reaction Rates

Reaction Rates

If the reaction equation is balanced, that does not mean that the reaction really occurs. The rate at which reactions occur depends on the particle energy, the particle flux and the reaction cross section. An example of a large repository of reaction rates is the REACLIB database, as maintained by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics.

Famous quotes containing the words reaction and/or rates:

    Sole and self-commanded works,
    Fears not undermining days,
    Grows by decays,
And, by the famous might that lurks
    In reaction and recoil,
Makes flames to freeze, and ice to boil.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

In the U.S. for instance, the value of a homemaker’s productive work has been imputed mostly when she was maimed or killed and insurance companies and/or the courts had to calculate the amount to pay her family in damages. Even at that, the rates were mostly pink collar and the big number was attributed to the husband’s pain and suffering.
    Gloria Steinem (20th century)
