The distinction from the latter group, where the higher peaks are located, is based on differences in geological composition.

Famous quotes containing the words northern, limestone and/or alps:

    Sophocles long ago
    Heard it on the Aegaean, and it brought
    Into his mind the turbid ebb and flow
    Of human misery; we
    Find also in the sound a thought,
    Hearing it by this distant northern sea.
    Matthew Arnold (1822–1888)

    Peering, I heard the hooves come down the hill.
    The posse passed, twelve horse; the leader’s face
    Was worn as limestone on an ancient sill.
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

    Th’ increasing prospect tires our wand’ring eyes.
    Hills peep o’er hills, and Alps on Alps arise!
    A perfect Judge will read each work of Wit
    With the same spirit that its author writ:
    Survey the Whole, nor seek slight faults to find
    Where nature moves, and rapture warms the mind;
    Alexander Pope (1688–1744)
