Constituency Profile
A key marginal seat with the main population centres being Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, it is divided between Labour-voting former mining areas, and Conservative-inclined rural villages.
The seat has been something of a bellwether, represented by the governing party in every election since its creation and is typical of many 'middle England' seats that fell to Labour in 1997 and were won back by the Conservatives in 2010.
In the Adrian Mole diaries by Sue Townsend an 'Ashby-de-la-Zouch' seat is won by Pandora Braithwaite for Labour in the 1997 election, mirroring the events of real life.

Famous quotes containing the words constituency and/or profile:
“Social Security is a government program with a constituency made up of the old, the near old and those who hope or fear to grow old. After 215 years of trying, we have finally discovered a special interest that includes 100 percent of the population. Now we can vote ourselves rich.”
—P.J. (Patrick Jake)
“Expecting rain, the profile of a day
Wears its soul like a hat....”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
