North Carolina Highway 44 - History

History

Construction started on the first section of the Goldsboro Bypass on October 9, 2008. The first phase opened on December 16, 2011. Temporarily assigned the NC 44 designation, the highway will eventually become part of a rerouted US 70 in the area. The project cost $65.5 million and included three interchanges at I-795, US 117 and Wayne Memorial Drive.

NC 44 appeared in the state one time before, from 1930-1994. At its height it connected NC 48, west of Whitakers, to NC 125, in Oak City. In 1994, the route was renumbered to NC 33 and NC 111.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

    The basic idea which runs right through modern history and modern liberalism is that the public has got to be marginalized. The general public are viewed as no more than ignorant and meddlesome outsiders, a bewildered herd.
    Noam Chomsky (b. 1928)

    You that would judge me do not judge alone
    This book or that, come to this hallowed place
    Where my friends’ portraits hang and look thereon;
    Ireland’s history in their lineaments trace;
    Think where man’s glory most begins and ends
    And say my glory was I had such friends.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    The history of all Magazines shows plainly that those which have attained celebrity were indebted for it to articles similar in natureto Berenice—although, I grant you, far superior in style and execution. I say similar in nature. You ask me in what does this nature consist? In the ludicrous heightened into the grotesque: the fearful coloured into the horrible: the witty exaggerated into the burlesque: the singular wrought out into the strange and mystical.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)
